The Digital and Audience Engagement Editor is responsible for enhancing and maintaining Searchlight’s online presence, with the goal of making sure that Searchlight New Mexico’s journalism reaches the widest audience, and has the biggest impact possible.
The Digital and Audience Engagement Editor manages and maintains the Searchlight website and content, including publishing production. They will develop and implement digital strategies to promote Searchlight, and it’s journalism, on all digital platforms. Working with the Director of Operations, the Digital and Audience Engagement Editor will enact initiatives to strengthen relationships with current audiences, and reach new audiences through a strategic presence on social and mobile platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and others, as appropriate.

Job-Specific Responsibilities
- Manage and maintain the website and CMS for Searchlight New Mexico, including posting and updating content, managing calls-to-action (CTAs), troubleshooting, and working with third-party designers, developers, and vendors.
- Work with Searchlight reporters to produce supplemental story visuals, including data visualizations, custom maps or infographics.
- Design and produce social digital content from Searchlight’s journalism for digital platforms, including video, graphics and social media copy.
- Ensure SLNM maintains a regular, lively and relevant presence on all appropriate social media platforms, including Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and emerging platforms, while maintaining our institutional voice.
- Monitor, analyze and report on analytics for Searchlight’s content, digital communications, and social media platforms and use these metrics/analytics to develop and implement effective social and audience engagement strategies, including audience funnel optimization and CTA strategy.
- Working with the editorial team, develop and execute engagement events, and edit/post recordings to Searchlightnm.org and social media platforms, to ensure that events reach broader audiences.
- Format and manage Searchlight’s weekly newsletters, other email campaigns and event invitations.
- Support Searchlight staff with their technology and digital needs.
- Write and proofread headlines/decks, captions, teasers, and other copy for social media, SEO optimization, CTAs and other web areas as needed.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree is required.
- Minimum of 3 years of audience engagement / digital journalism experience required
Preferred Skills and Qualifications:
- Excels in WordPress.org administration and management.
- Proficient in Adobe Creative Cloud programs (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, Premiere, Audition), Word, Excel, and familiarity with HTML, and CSS.
- Proficient in search engine optimization (SEO), particularly if WordPress sites.
- Proficient in gathering and parsing website analytics with Google Analytics, and methods for tracking social media reach and engagement on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube.
- Proficient use of MailChimp ESP to maintain audiences, manage segments and send email campaigns.
- Passion and proven skill for web and digital graphic design.
- Excellent written communication and organizational skills and commitment to the highest standards of journalistic accuracy and ethics.
