This is a critical moment. The confluence of the ongoing COVID-19 crisis, the impending election, and widespread social unrest makes community connection and the news media more important than ever. But the dialogue between representatives of the press and everyday New Mexicans is lacking. A virtual town hall presented by Searchlight New Mexico will endeavor to change this.
As scores of news organizations around the country have slashed staff and coverage, arguably weakening the foundation of democracy, this conversation is more vital than ever. Reporters and editors representing every corner of New Mexico will discuss the state of affairs, assess the damage, and envision the prospects going forward.
This public forum is aimed at every citizen who cares about our democracy, which fundamentally rests upon access to solid facts and trustworthy reporting.
Bring your questions and concerns to the table. Please spread the word and join us on Sept. 29.
