A man accused in multiple sexual assaults during two camping trips between 1985 and 1995 has been sentenced to more than three decades in prison, state Attorney General Raúl Torrez announced Wednesday.
Rollie Bruvold, 75, was sentenced to 36 years after he was found guilty of four charges of criminal sexual penetration of a child by a jury in 13th Judicial District Court in Sandoval County last month.
The sentence caps years of appeals, overturned sentences and other complications in the case against Bruvold, Torrez said in a news release.
“This sentence reflects the seriousness of these horrific crimes and ensures that this dangerous predator will continue to be held accountable,” he said in a statement. “While no amount of time can undo the trauma inflicted on these victims, this outcome delivers a measure of justice and reinforces our unwavering commitment to protecting children and supporting survivors.”
Bruvold was originally accused of grooming and raping three minors from an early age until they reached puberty, according to a pretrial detention motion filed in 2020. He was indicted by a grand jury in 2002, but raised concerns about his competency in 2003. A judge ruled in his favor in 2005 and committed him to a long-term care facility months later.
Torrez noted in a separate news release that Bruvold had been sentenced to 108 years in prison in 2002, but the state Court of Appeals overturned several convictions and brought his total term down to 18 years. Torrez said that during his previous job as 2nd Judicial District attorney, he worked to bring new charges against Bruvold, leading to the new convictions.
Bruvold has been in custody since 2002, Torrez noted.
